Terrastack, Varaha Climate, Farmers for Forests and Climitra Carbon, four Indian climate-technology organisations, have been selected for the inaugural Google DeepMind Accelerator: AI for the Planet across the Asia-Pacific region, joining a cohort of 16 organisations from across the region working to apply artificial intelligence to environmental challenges. The four Indian selections represent a notably strong showing for the country within the accelerator's first cohort, reflecting the growing maturity of India's climate-technology sector and its increasing ability to compete for prestigious international accelerator placements against climate-tech organisations from across the broader Asia-Pacific region. According to a statement from Google, the selected organisations will receive access to the company's latest AI technology stack, tailored technical support, and expert mentorship over the coming three months, resources specifically designed to help the cohort scale their environmental solutions more effectively than they could achieve independently, given the substantial computational and technical expertise gap that often separates promising climate-tech innovations from organisations with the resources to deploy AI capabilities at the scale needed for genuine large-area environmental monitoring and intervention.
The four selected Indian organisations span distinct but complementary areas within the climate-technology landscape. Varaha Climate has built its work around carbon removal and agricultural soil carbon monitoring, a category that has attracted growing international climate finance attention as voluntary and compliance carbon markets increasingly demand more rigorous, technology-verified measurement of soil carbon sequestration claims rather than relying on the less precise estimation methodologies that characterised earlier generations of agricultural carbon projects. Farmers for Forests focuses on forest restoration and agroforestry initiatives that combine ecological restoration goals with direct economic benefits for participating farming communities, a model that has gained increasing traction among climate funders seeking interventions that align environmental and livelihood outcomes rather than treating them as separate objectives. Climitra Carbon and Terrastack round out the Indian cohort, with their specific technical approaches spanning additional dimensions of the climate-monitoring and intervention landscape that AI-driven satellite imagery analysis, sensor data processing and predictive modelling have increasingly made possible at a scale and cost that would have been prohibitive using traditional field-survey-based environmental monitoring methods alone.
