Dhirubhai Ambani: The Man Who Started With One Rented Table
Oct 28, 2026
In 1958, a young man came home to India with nothing to his name. No degree. No family fortune. No godfather.
Forty-four years later, when he died, millions of Indians mourned him like family, because he had made them rich too.
His name was Dhirubhai Ambani.
He was born in 1932 in Chorwad, a small village in Gujarat. His father was a school teacher, and money was always short. As a boy, he sold snacks to pilgrims on weekends. But he wasn’t just selling. He was learning how people think.
At 17 he sailed to Aden and worked as a clerk, later with a Shell fuel distributor. Others there saw a salary. He saw a classroom. The story goes that he noticed something about Yemen’s silver coins that no one else had spotted. It was a small trick, but it taught him a big lesson he never forgot: opportunity hides where others don’t look.
He came back to Bombay with small savings and a big hunger. He rented a cramped room with one table, three chairs and one telephone, and named it Reliance Commercial Corporation. He traded spices, then polyester yarn, working sixteen hours a day.
Then came his first big bet: a textile mill at Naroda, near Ahmedabad. When wholesalers refused to stock his fabric, he didn’t plead. He did something nobody expected.
But his boldest move was still ahead. In 1977 he made a decision that would change how ordinary Indians — teachers, clerks, small-town families — thought about money forever.
The road was not smooth. There were rivals and controversies, and then a stroke that took away the strength in his right hand.
Did he stop?
