Harvard-Trained Psychiatrist Aakash Sathappan Named Site Director as Lumin Health Expands Boston-Area Mental Health Care

Lumin Health, a Massachusetts-based provider of medically supervised ketamine treatment and insurance-covered esketamine (Spravato) for treatment-resistant depression, has named Indian American psychiatrist Dr. Aakash Sathappan as site director of its Brookline, Massachusetts clinic — a step the company says will strengthen its clinical leadership as it expands access across the Greater Boston region.

In his new role, Dr. Sathappan will oversee clinical operations at the Brookline outpatient center, located at 1101 Beacon Street between Coolidge Corner and Washington Square on the Green Line's C branch. The site serves patients from Brookline, Boston, Allston-Brighton, Newton, Cambridge and Jamaica Plain. His responsibilities include directing patient-centered care, coordinating with referring physicians and community referral networks, and ensuring the consistent delivery of evidence-based treatment protocols within Lumin Health's outpatient model.

Dr. Sathappan brings a substantial academic and clinical record to the position. A board-certified psychiatrist, he completed his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine before pursuing advanced psychiatric training and fellowship work through Harvard-affiliated institutions, including clinical experience at Boston Children's Hospital. He holds a faculty appointment as an Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and his training spans adolescent psychiatry, psychiatric consent, and intensive interventions including transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) — giving him a broad vantage point across the interventional psychiatry landscape that patients often have to navigate on their own.

Speaking about the appointment, Dr. Sathappan said that treatment-resistant depression patients frequently arrive after years of trying approaches that have not worked, often feeling discouraged along the way. What matters most, he said, is creating an environment where treatment is both clinically rigorous and deeply supportive. The appointment comes amid growing national demand for interventional behavioral healthcare. As FDA-approved treatments such as esketamine nasal spray and intramuscular ketamine have become increasingly covered by insurance, more patients than ever are seeking care — yet delivery of that care remains split between large hospital systems on one end and home-based or telehealth models on the other, neither of which fully addresses the need for structured, in-person clinical oversight.

Lumin Health positions its single-site model as an answer to that gap. The organization operates five facilities across Massachusetts and Maryland, pairing medical supervision and standardized clinical protocols with emotional support, all delivered within one outpatient setting rather than across a fragmented network of providers. The company says this integrated approach is especially relevant for patients who have already cycled through multiple unsuccessful treatments.
