Avendus Wealth Management has named Umang Papneja as Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, tapping a two-decade veteran of private banking and wealth management to steer the firm's next phase of growth. Papneja joins from Julius Baer India, where he most recently served as chief executive officer and led the expansion of the Swiss private bank's onshore Indian franchise.
The appointment continues a period of leadership change across India's wealth management industry, which has grown rapidly alongside the country's expanding base of high-net-worth individuals, first-generation entrepreneurs and family offices. Avendus, known primarily for its investment banking and asset management businesses, has been building out its wealth management arm as a distinct pillar of the group's offering, targeting a client base that increasingly spans not just legacy business families but also the founders and early employees of India's growing roster of well-capitalised startups.
Papneja's career prior to Julius Baer included more than a decade at IIFL Wealth, where he served as Chief Investment Officer and helped steer investment strategy across asset classes for one of India's largest independent wealth management platforms. That combination of experience — leading both the investment strategy function at a large domestic wealth manager and the country operations of a global private bank — positions him to address a dual mandate that Avendus has signalled: deepening investment sophistication while expanding the client base beyond traditional ultra-high-net-worth segments.
