Intel Honours Indian-Origin Professors Vijay Raghunathan and Visvesh Sathe with 2025 Outstanding Researcher Awards

Intel has named two Indian-origin engineering professors — Vijay Raghunathan of Purdue University and Visvesh Sathe of the Georgia Institute of Technology — among the ten academic researchers worldwide honoured with its 2025 Outstanding Researcher Awards, the company's annual recognition of exceptional work conducted through its university-sponsored research programme.

The Outstanding Researcher Awards, now in their sixth year in their current form, single out academics whose Intel-sponsored research has produced what the company calls fundamental insights and meaningful impact on the technology ecosystem, drawn from the more than a thousand researchers Intel funds annually across its global academic partnerships. This year's cohort of ten researchers spans institutions and research areas from privacy-preserving machine learning to advanced chip architecture.

Raghunathan, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue and the university's vice president for global partnerships and programs and director of semiconductor education, was recognised for research on multimodal system understanding and heterogeneous AI compute across CPUs, GPUs and NPUs. Intel's citation noted that his work advanced heterogeneous AI computing for transformers, vision-language and vision-language-action models, graph neural networks, and newer architectures such as Mamba and state-space networks — introducing new techniques for cross-accelerator coordination that improved both performance and energy efficiency, and that informed the evolution of Intel's next-generation AI platforms. Raghunathan, who earned his B.Tech from IIT Madras before completing his master's and PhD at UCLA, was named an IEEE Fellow in 2023 and previously received the IEEE/ACM Under-40 Innovators Award. In 2022 he co-founded Purdue's Semiconductor Degrees Program, now recognised nationally and internationally as a model for semiconductor workforce development, and has helped establish international education partnerships including an alliance with the India Semiconductor Mission.

Sathe, an associate professor in Georgia Tech's School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, was honoured for his work on runtime thermal management in scaled 3D system-on-chip technologies — research that developed compact digital temperature sensors powered directly off a chip's main power supply, offering high precision, minimal noise interference and simplified single-point calibration. Validated across multiple test chips and firmware implementations, the sensors provide process-scalable, detailed thermal monitoring intended to improve reliability in next-generation three-dimensional chip stacks. It is the second time Sathe has received the award, having first won it in 2020 for separate work on integrated voltage regulation while he was on the faculty at the University of Washington. He joined Georgia Tech's ECE department in 2022 after earlier roles at the University of Washington and as a technical staff member in AMD's Low-Power Advanced Development Group, and now leads the Processing Systems Lab, whose research spans clocking, voltage regulation, power management, ultra-low-power electronics and closed-loop neural interfaces.

“Intel's academic research projects are a core part of the company's strategy to explore critical research paths,” said Dr. Aravind Dasu, co-director of Intel's Corporate Research Council, of this year's award cohort. Dr. Henning Braunisch, the council's other co-director, added that the company was “pleased to recognize the important contributions of these carefully selected researchers.”

The research introduced new techniques for cross-accelerator coordination that improved performance and energy efficiency, while informing the evolution of Intel's next-generation AI platforms and system architectures.

Selection criteria, according to Intel, weigh fundamental research insight and demonstrated real-world impact on the company's technology roadmap — meaning award recipients' work does not remain confined to academic publication, but actively informs product and platform decisions inside one of the world's largest semiconductor companies. That practical translation from lab to roadmap is precisely what distinguishes the award from more conventional academic honours, and is a large part of why it carries particular weight within the chip-design research community.

Raghunathan's award this year builds on a research and administrative career that has increasingly bridged pure academic inquiry and applied industrial policy. Beyond his professorship, his role directing Purdue's semiconductor education initiatives places him at the centre of one of the most closely watched university-level responses to the US CHIPS Act era's push to rebuild domestic chip-design and fabrication talent pipelines. His work establishing formal ties with the India Semiconductor Mission adds an unusually direct India-US bridge to that effort, positioning Purdue's programme as a reference point not only for American universities but for India's own rapidly expanding semiconductor education ambitions.

Sathe's repeat recognition — a distinction only a small number of Outstanding Researcher Award recipients have achieved across the programme's history — reflects a research trajectory that has remained tightly focused on a single, technically demanding problem: how to measure and manage heat inside increasingly three-dimensional, tightly stacked chip architectures, precisely the class of packaging technology that next-generation AI accelerators are expected to rely on as traditional two-dimensional scaling reaches its physical limits. His move from the University of Washington to Georgia Tech in 2022 also placed him within one of the country's most active academic semiconductor-packaging research clusters, reinforcing Georgia Tech's standing as a leading centre for advanced chip-integration research even as competition for top faculty in the field intensifies across US research universities racing to build out semiconductor-focused programmes.
