MATTER, the Indian electric motorcycle manufacturer, has raised $25 million in fresh funding to scale up production and support the launch of four new electric motorcycle models. The round, announced on August 25, 2026, is part of a cluster of Indian venture deals that closed the same day across aerospace, climate tech and consumer categories.

The decision to fund four simultaneous model launches, rather than a single flagship vehicle, indicates an effort to move quickly from a narrow product line toward a fuller portfolio capable of addressing multiple price points and rider segments within India's still-nascent electric motorcycle category.

India's electric two-wheeler market has grown into one of the more closely watched segments of the country's broader EV transition, driven by rising fuel costs, government incentives for electric mobility, and growing consumer acceptance of electric motorcycles and scooters as viable alternatives to petrol-powered vehicles. MATTER has positioned itself within this market as a manufacturer focused on performance-oriented electric motorcycles, a smaller but higher-margin niche compared with the mass-market electric scooter segment dominated by larger players.

Government incentive schemes at both the central and state level, including subsidies tied to the FAME programme and various state-specific EV policies, have played a significant role in narrowing the upfront cost gap between electric and petrol two-wheelers in India, a gap that has historically been one of the primary barriers to mainstream EV adoption in the country's price-sensitive two-wheeler market.

The company's plan to launch four new models signals an effort to broaden its product line-up beyond its initial offerings, a step that will require not only manufacturing capacity but also an expanded dealer and service network capable of supporting a wider range of vehicles. Scaling manufacturing capacity remains one of the central challenges for India's EV makers, many of which have had to balance rapid demand growth against the capital intensity of building out battery supply chains and assembly capabilities domestically.

Battery supply chain localisation in particular has emerged as a critical bottleneck for Indian EV manufacturers, given the country's continued reliance on imported battery cells and components. Companies that can secure reliable, cost-competitive battery supply -- whether through direct manufacturing partnerships or long-term supply agreements -- have generally been better positioned to scale production without being exposed to the price volatility that has periodically affected global battery raw material markets.

With the new funding, MATTER joins a growing list of Indian EV manufacturers using fresh capital to move from early-stage production toward more meaningful manufacturing scale. The company's progress will be watched as an indicator of whether India's electric motorcycle segment, still considerably smaller than the electric scooter market, can carve out sustainable demand as consumer preferences continue to shift toward electric two-wheelers.

The electric motorcycle segment specifically has lagged the broader electric scooter category in India, in part because performance-oriented motorcycle buyers have historically been more sensitive to range, charging infrastructure and top-speed limitations than commuter-focused scooter buyers. MATTER's ability to address those specific concerns across its expanded model line-up will likely determine how quickly the segment can close that gap.
