India's car showrooms have had their busiest month on record. The country's leading carmakers reported their highest-ever monthly domestic sales in October, as festive demand, new launches and a rush for sport utility vehicles combined to deliver a bumper month for the industry.

Maruti Suzuki, India's largest carmaker, sold 2,16,789 vehicles in the domestic market in October, up 20% from a year earlier and its highest-ever monthly domestic figure, according to company data released on Sunday, November 1, and reported by Business Today. Including supplies to other carmakers, its domestic sales reached 2,26,248 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra, Hyundai Motor India and Kia India also reported record months, while Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business grew 21%.

Maruti's record month

Maruti's growth was led by utility vehicles, whose sales rose 26% to 97,787 units, reflecting Indian buyers' continuing shift towards SUVs. Sales of passenger cars, including hatchbacks and sedans, rose 18% to 1,00,877 units, a sign of renewed demand in the entry and mid-level segments where Maruti dominates. Van sales were flat at 13,720 units.

For the April-October period of the 2026-27 financial year, Maruti's domestic sales, including supplies to other carmakers, rose 29% to 13,72,771 units, according to Business Today.

The strong performance of smaller cars is notable. In recent years, entry-level car sales had weakened as rising prices, stricter safety and emissions regulations and slower income growth among lower-middle-class buyers made them less affordable. October's figures suggest that festive offers and improving rural incomes are bringing buyers back.

Mahindra's SUV high

Mahindra & Mahindra sold 73,338 SUVs in the domestic market, up 2% and its highest-ever monthly SUV figure. Its total vehicle sales, including commercial vehicles and exports, reached a record 1,31,109 units.

"October was a landmark month for us," said Velusamy R, president of Mahindra's automotive business.

Mahindra's domestic utility vehicle sales for April-October rose 17% to 4,31,480 units. The company has built a strong position in the SUV market with models such as the Scorpio, XUV700, Thar and XUV 3XO, as well as its newer electric SUVs.

Hyundai's best month

Hyundai Motor India sold 62,799 vehicles domestically, up 16.7% and its highest-ever monthly domestic figure. Sales of the Venue compact SUV reached 13,017 units, the model's best domestic month.

Managing director and chief executive Tarun Garg credited "strong festive demand" for the performance. Hyundai listed its Indian business on the stock exchanges in October 2024 in what was then India's largest IPO.

Tata's growth and EV surge

Tata Motors' passenger vehicle business sold 73,894 units in the domestic market, up 21%. Its electric vehicle sales, including domestic and international, jumped 75% to 16,244 units from 9,286, according to Business Today.

Tata Motors has been India's leading electric car maker for several years, with models such as the Nexon EV, Punch EV, Tiago EV and Curvv EV. The strong rise in EV sales suggests that electric cars are gaining traction beyond early adopters, helped by a wider range of models, improved charging infrastructure and rising petrol prices.

Kia's record

Kia India's domestic wholesales rose 13.22% to 33,462 units from 29,556, its highest monthly total since entering India and its second consecutive monthly record after 32,017 units in September. The Seltos SUV sold more than 13,000 units, and CNG variants of the Carens and Carens Clavis made up about 10% of sales. Kia also reported record electric vehicle sales, up 31% from September.

Why October was so strong

Several factors combined to drive record sales. The festive season, including Navratri, Dussehra and the run-up to Diwali, is traditionally the busiest period for car purchases in India, as many buyers consider it auspicious to buy new vehicles. Carmakers and dealers offer discounts, free accessories and financing deals to attract buyers.

Rural demand has also improved, supported by a reasonable monsoon and higher crop prices, which boost farm incomes. Urban demand has been supported by salary growth in the services sector and easy access to car loans.

New launches have added to the momentum. Carmakers have introduced a steady stream of new SUVs, facelifts and electric models, giving buyers more choice.

Wholesales versus retail

The figures reported by carmakers are wholesales, meaning vehicles dispatched from factories to dealers, rather than retail sales to customers. Carmakers typically build up dealer inventories ahead of the festive season to meet expected demand. Retail registration data, compiled by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations, will show how many vehicles were actually sold to customers.

High dealer inventories can become a concern if retail demand does not keep pace with wholesales, potentially leading to heavy discounting after the festive season.

Fuel prices and costs

The record sales came despite higher fuel prices. Petrol and diesel prices were raised by about ₹7.50 a litre in May, according to BW Businessworld, as the government passed on part of the increase in crude oil costs. Higher running costs could encourage some buyers to choose more fuel-efficient cars, CNG vehicles or electric models.

Carmakers have also faced higher input costs for steel, aluminium and other materials, as well as rising logistics costs. Some have raised prices, which could affect demand in the coming months.

Exports

Indian carmakers have also been expanding exports. Maruti has become a significant exporter, shipping vehicles to markets in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Hyundai and Kia use India as an export base for other emerging markets. Exports provide an additional source of growth and help carmakers use their Indian manufacturing capacity more fully.

The road ahead

India is the world's third-largest car market by sales, after China and the United States. With car ownership still low relative to population, analysts believe the market has significant long-term growth potential. The shift towards SUVs and electric vehicles is changing the industry's product mix and competitive landscape.

What it means for investors

For investors, record festive sales are a positive signal for auto stocks, although much of the strength may already be reflected in share prices. Analysts will watch whether demand remains robust after the festive season, how margins are affected by input costs and discounts, and the pace of the transition to electric vehicles.

What comes next

November sales, which include the Diwali period, will provide a further test of festive demand. Industry watchers will also look at retail registration data to gauge whether dealer inventories are aligned with customer demand. For now, October's figures confirm that India's car market is enjoying one of its strongest periods ever.
