Genesco's Chief Strategy and Digital Officer Parag Desai to Retire After More Than a Decade of Transformation

Genesco Inc., the Nashville-based parent company of footwear retail brands Journeys, Schuh and Johnston & Murphy, has announced the upcoming retirement of Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy and Digital Officer Parag D. Desai, closing out a tenure that spanned more than a decade and encompassed one of the more significant technology overhauls in the company's recent history. Desai's departure takes effect October 31, with his responsibilities set to transition to other members of Genesco's senior leadership team rather than to a single named successor.

Desai first joined Genesco in 2014 as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Shared Services, a role focused on corporate-level planning and cross-brand operational efficiency. In April 2021, the company elevated him to the newly created position of Chief Strategy and Digital Officer, placing him in direct charge of Genesco's technology platforms, consumer data analytics and digital operations — a portfolio that put him at the center of the company's broader effort to modernise a multi-brand retail business built on a mix of mall-based, off-mall and international footprint across its constituent brands.

During his tenure in the chief strategy and digital role, Desai helped execute Genesco's overarching Footwear First strategic initiative, a company-wide effort to sharpen focus on the group's core footwear business while driving deeper integration across its constituent brands, including teen-focused retailer Journeys, UK footwear chain Schuh, and premium menswear label Johnston & Murphy. Genesco has credited Desai with transforming the company's technology platforms and data-insight capabilities and with helping to establish what the company describes as a next-generation technology operating model, a foundation the retailer says positions it well for its future growth ambitions.

Genesco Board Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer Mimi E. Vaughn credited Desai as an exceptional leader and trusted advisor whose ability to connect strategy with execution, and to work effectively across functional areas of the business, had been instrumental during a period of substantial transformation. Desai, for his part, described it as a privilege to have worked alongside Genesco's teams during that period, noting that together they had strengthened the company's strategic foundation and built capabilities intended to position Genesco well for what comes next.

Parag has been an exceptional leader, trusted advisor and valued member of our executive team. His remarkable ability to connect strategy with execution and people across functional areas set him apart.

Before joining Genesco, Desai spent more than thirteen years at McKinsey & Company, the global management consultancy — a background in high-level strategic advisory work that Genesco has said informed his approach to aligning technology investment with broader corporate strategy throughout his time at the company. That consulting pedigree, paired with more than a decade of direct operating experience inside a publicly traded, multi-brand retailer, places Desai among a cohort of Indian-American executives who have moved from elite strategy consulting into senior in-house leadership roles at major U.S. retail and consumer companies.

The transition terms disclosed by Genesco point to a carefully managed handover rather than an abrupt departure. Desai moved from full-time to part-time status effective August 7, continuing to retain his title through the transition period while working a limited number of hours each month to support the handoff of his responsibilities and the onboarding of the executives absorbing them, for which he will be compensated at a rate of $10,000 per month for up to 32 hours, with additional hours paid pro rata. He will also remain eligible for Genesco's Fiscal 2027 Short-Term Incentive Plan, with a target bonus of $338,000, and his prior performance share unit awards from April 2024 and July 2025 will receive standard retirement treatment under the company's compensation plans.

Genesco has not named a direct successor to the Chief Strategy and Digital Officer role, instead distributing Desai's responsibilities across the existing senior leadership bench — an approach that suggests the company views the digital and strategic capabilities Desai helped build as now sufficiently embedded across the organisation to be absorbed without a single dedicated executive at the helm. Whether that distributed model proves durable as Genesco continues to navigate a retail environment shaped by shifting consumer behaviour, omnichannel pressure and the broader industry-wide push toward AI-enabled operations will likely become clearer over the coming fiscal year.

For a company with brands spanning both American teen fashion and British high-street footwear retail, Desai's departure marks the end of an era defined by quiet, execution-focused technological modernisation rather than headline-grabbing reinvention — the kind of steady strategic stewardship that rarely draws outside attention until the executive behind it departs.
