Tourism Malaysia held the Mumbai leg of its 'Sales Mission to India – Series 2' on August 17, 2026, bringing together 40 Malaysian tourism stakeholders — including hoteliers, tour operators and airline partners — to strengthen trade partnerships and business opportunities with their Indian counterparts. The three-city mission, spanning Chennai, Mumbai and New Delhi from August 12 to 20, forms part of Malaysia's broader effort to sustain momentum under its 'Visit Malaysia 2026' campaign, which has been extended through 2027 as the country works to maintain its position among India's top international travel destinations.
The mission forms part of a broader pattern of intensified tourism board engagement between Southeast Asian destinations and the Indian outbound travel market, as countries across the region compete for a growing share of India's rapidly expanding pool of internationally mobile leisure and business travellers.
The Mumbai event drew strong attendance from both established and emerging Indian travel trade partners.
The Mumbai event followed the mission's opening leg in Chennai and preceded its concluding stop in New Delhi, with the initiative organised in collaboration with Batik Air under the Visit Malaysia 2026 banner. The mission was led by Tourism Malaysia Director General Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, alongside Haryanty Abu Bakar, Director of Tourism Malaysia Mumbai, Dato Aruldas, President of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents, and Nigel Wong, President of the Malaysian Inbound Tourism Association — reflecting a coordinated public-private partnership approach to sustaining Malaysia's positioning within one of its most important international source markets.

Alongside the trade mission, Haryanty Abu Bakar announced that Tourism Malaysia Mumbai has officially launched the 'CHALO MALAYSIA' Mumbai Metro Branding Campaign, a month-long destination marketing initiative running from August 10 to September 10, 2026, along Mumbai Metro Line 1. The campaign transforms a high-capacity commuter train into a moving visual showcase of Malaysia's tourism offerings, part of a broader strategy to keep Malaysia top-of-mind among Indian travellers as the country builds toward the extended Visit Malaysia 2026-2027 campaign period.
India's outbound leisure travel market has grown substantially over the past several years, driven by rising middle-class disposable incomes, expanding low-cost carrier route networks, and growing consumer appetite for accessible international destinations offering strong value relative to domestic travel costs — a trend that has made Southeast Asian destinations including Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia consistently popular choices among Indian outbound travellers.
India has emerged as one of Malaysia's most important and fastest-growing international source markets, ranking alongside Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and China among the country's top five sources of visitor arrivals. Following the introduction of visa-free travel for Indian nationals in December 2023, Malaysia welcomed more than 1.5 million visitor arrivals from India in 2025, a trend Tourism Malaysia officials say they expect to continue through 2026 and beyond, supported by sustained promotional investment and expanding airline connectivity between the two countries.
Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, addressing stakeholders during the Mumbai event, said India remains one of Tourism Malaysia's most important and fastest-growing source markets, while acknowledging that evolving geopolitical developments and shifting international travel sentiment could influence demand in certain regions. He emphasised that Tourism Malaysia remains committed to maintaining a strong presence in the Indian market through sustained, targeted and market-driven promotional efforts, supported by close collaboration with airline partners and the broader travel trade.
