South Korean artificial intelligence startup Turing has raised ₩7 billion in Series B funding, the company announced on September 1, from investors including Korea Development Bank, Kingo Investment Partners and Company K Partners, with existing backer Kolon Investment also participating in the round. The financing supports Turing's ambition to expand its university-focused AI agent, GPAI, beyond its initial STEM-discipline focus into a broader academic product serving students across all fields of study.
GPAI operates as an AI agent built specifically around university academic workflows, assisting students with studying, assignment completion, exam preparation and team-based project work. The product's design reflects a deliberate strategic choice to build a purpose-specific AI tool tailored to the particular needs and context of higher-education learners, rather than positioning the product as a generic AI assistant repurposed for academic use cases.
Turing reports that GPAI has surpassed 1.5 million sign-ups within its first year of operation, with growth concentrated primarily in South Korea and the United States — two markets characterised by large, digitally engaged student populations and relatively high smartphone and laptop penetration among university-aged users. That rapid early adoption provides Turing with a substantial and growing base of user engagement data, which the company can leverage to continue refining GPAI's capabilities across an expanding range of academic use cases.
The company's stated plan to broaden GPAI's reach from its STEM roots to students across all academic disciplines reflects a common growth pattern among successful vertical AI products: establishing product-market fit within a focused initial use case before expanding into adjacent segments once core functionality and user trust have been firmly established.
